Are you interested in becoming a driving instructor?

Becoming a driving instructor is an opportunity for you to learn a new trade, be your own boss, work your own hours and achieve job satisfaction.

Overall, it is a career with great rewards with the added benefit of knowing that you are giving people a new lease of life by helping them become mobile with their new driving skills.

There are some pre-requisites that you need to fulfil before applying and once approved you will need to take three separate tests from the Driving Standards Agency (DVSA). This could take you some months to complete because of the length of training required. These are the three tests that you will need to pass:

Part 1: Theory Test
Part 2: Practical Driving Test
Part 3: Instructional Ability Test.

There are many large companies who will promise you a "guaranteed job" if you qualify with them, or they will promise that you will earn £30,000 a year. What isn't made clear is how many hours a week you would have to work in order to make that a reality. With Safer Driver Training, you can commit as much time as you want to your training and qualify whilst you do your current job. This makes it ideal for those seeking a new career, or perhaps looking to take early retirement but don't want to give up working.

As an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) you can work your own hours to suit you, teaching who you want when you want. You will have full control over your earnings potential. Be aware that sometimes you might need to work unsociable hours to meet your pupils' needs. Evening and weekends lessons tend to be very popular with learner drivers! You will need to be flexible to fit around their work, school, college or university life.

Safer Driver Training offers driving instructor training in Staffordshire, although it is not a major issue if you live further away as long as you are willing to travel and meet at a mutual convenient location for the training. The meeting location will be relevant to what stage you are at with your training, essentially most training will be done near the test centre where you will do your qualifying exams.

There are some companies who will give you a fixed price for your training but this is often unrealistic. Everybody is different, and becoming an ADI is really challenging. Our approach is to see what you need to do in order to qualify and give you the right training at the right price.

Before you start any training we will need to have a chat, either face to face or by video call, to find out what you need, and also to explain how the process works, timescales, costs, reasonable expectations and earnings etc. It's also important for you to see what the job is really like, so observing some real driving lessons with us from the back seat is a great way to find out if it's for you. If it's not, no problem!
